Many prospective drivers wonder what exactly the B category offers and what vehicles they can drive after passing the driving test. Although most of us associate it primarily with passenger cars, the scope of authorizations is much broader. It’s worth organizing this knowledge, especially since the B category driving license is the most popular driving license in Poland.
The most important part of category B is the ability to drive passenger cars with a gross vehicle weight of up to 3.5 tons. This covers the vast majority of cars found on the road, both urban and tourist. You can travel alone, with your family, and also take passengers – up to the maximum number specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
Passenger cars are the most popular choice for everyday use: commuting, family trips, or short city trips.
With a B category, you can also drive many light delivery vehicles, vans, and vehicles used for transporting light loads. This is important because many professions rely on such vehicles: couriers, technicians, people performing small removals, and service work.
Category B allows you to drive a passenger car with a light trailer up to 750 kg. This means you can use caravans, cargo trailers, or recreational trailers, popular, for example, among those traveling or transporting sports equipment.
In some cases, it is also possible to drive a combination exceeding 3.5 tons of total weight if the trailer meets certain requirements. This significantly expands practical possibilities, which many drivers are unaware of.
One of the most extensive extensions of category B is the ability to drive 125cc motorcycles, provided you have held your license for at least three years. This is an attractive option for drivers who want to try riding a motorcycle without obtaining an additional category.
125cc motorcycles are becoming increasingly popular because they excel in traffic jams and have low maintenance costs. However, it’s important to remember that this is possible only if their power doesn’t exceed 11 kW (approx. 15 hp) and the power-to-weight ratio doesn’t exceed 0.1 kW/kg.
Obtaining the license is one thing, but skillfully using the benefits of a category B license is equally important. Many drivers choose to take additional refresher courses, for example, to learn how to maneuver a larger vehicle more confidently or to familiarize themselves with a trailer.
In such situations, we can take advantage of refresher courses at the OES School, where instructors help consolidate driving techniques and safely use the full scope of their license.
